American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority indicated DFW, the second-busiest airport in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in California to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to travel by air in the US.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
