Arsenal's Debated Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, estimated to cost around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since been heavily criticized.

The backlash is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.

Earlier this year, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as an arm of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

Nonetheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and responsible tourism, encouraging numerous followers to discover the country, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's goal of becoming an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while delivering grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in athletics nationwide.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “advancing” the club's aspirations.

Yet this view was contested by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Gunners for Peace demonstrating outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to hide the Visit Rwanda logo on uniforms.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

Around that time, Paris Saint-Germain extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

At the same time, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the identical duration that has caused the branding featured on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
