Ayoub El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Secures Morocco's Victory Against the Coelacanths in Afcon Opening Match.

The the Moroccan side shook off a anxious beginning to beat Comoros in the tournament's opening game on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.

It was a less than dominant performance, though, from the heavily tipped hosts, who sit 97 places above the small island nation in the FIFA rankings and had to grind out for the points in wet conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.

Nervy Start and Missed Chances

Morocco failed to convert an early spot-kick and were goalless at half-time despite dominating possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.

The goal arrived after full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot into the net.

“The first match is always difficult but we delivered in the second period,” commented manager Walid Regragui.

The Substitute's Piece of Magic

The tension was then extinguished by a moment of pure genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes following coming on, the striker met a cross with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the win.

Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Brahim Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was saved by keeper Pandor.

Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity

Comoros stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' greater quality eventually told.

Goalkeeper Pandor made a number of other fine saves to limit the scoreline as the game progressed, although Comoros did have a chance for an equaliser shortly following Díaz's goal, with Saïd shooting straight at keeper Yassine Bounou.

Injury Concern for Hosts

The three points was somewhat overshadowed by an injury to the skipper, Saïss, who was forced off after the 18th minute in some distress.

This centre-back had just made his comeback to the national side last month following a lengthy layoff caused by ankle surgery.

The win extends Morocco's historic run of consecutive wins to 19, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
