What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
